This presentation, and the article it is based on, is intended to provide a framework to help caregivers refer families to support services that might be needed by a child. The most important elements of this approach are: -A trusting relationship with the parent and/or family members -Genuine respect -Uunderstanding of the family’s feelings and decisions -Ongoing support and acceptance of the child The caregiver’s approach to the family may make all the difference in the family’s reaction and follow-up. Outcomes Provide a framework for caregivers: -When they have concerns that a child in their care might have a developmental delay, disability, or significant behavior problem -When preparing to share concerns with a child’s parents or family members (anyone raising the child) -Understand different ways family members will receive and act on the expressed concern.
