Unit blocks were created in the early 1900’s and are still one of children’s favorite materials. Why has such simple materials been able to hold children’s attention and focus even in the age of screens, legos and other modern toys? What opportunities and possibilities do blocks offer children and teachers? This two-part workshop will explore the magic of blocks, and support teachers in developing skills to create a strong culture of block building in their classrooms. Participants will: Learn about the history of block play Discuss the benefits of block play for children from 0 through 5 Explore different types of blocks Study block play stories Reflect on their own classrooms and find ways to reconnect with the joys of offering blocks as tools for learning Familiarize themselves with schema theory and learn about how to use this knowledge to see children’s competence through their block play creations

This is an Overview/Introductory training for Teaching Staff, Administration/Leadership Staff, Family Child Care Providers.

This training will cover:
  • Learning Environments and Curriculum: Participants will: Discuss the needs of adult learners Learn about the evolution of PLCs Share experiences as reflective educators Study facilitation strategies and approaches Discover the power of protocols for framing discussions, dilemmas and cases Practice protocols for facilitation Plan for the implementation of PLCS in their contexts
